The NCDOT GIS Unit is pleased to announce release of the GIS Data layers on the GIS unit webpage specified below for First Quarter 2016. 

Due to the GIS Unit's conversion to ESRI's Roads and Highways ALRS model, GIS Unit derived quarterly publication products are not available for First Quarter 2016.  We anticipate publishing an interim 1st quarter 2016 release of GIS Unit derived products. All incoming customer publication products continue as normal and are currently scheduled for the following months in May, August and November.

1. The NCDOT Rail Division data for crossings, facilities and track locations have been updated.

2. The NCDOT Structure Locations data contains all features previously found in the NCDOT BridgeLocations shapefile, plus 3 types of signs currently maintained by the NCDOT Structures Management Unit.
3. The Statewide Boundary layerers are current as of January 2016.

Road Characteristics Arcs

An Arc Layer for visual representation of a subset of road characteristics for the state road system. Each arc/record is split where road characteristics change along a route. This is a digital file of the North Carolina Department of Transportation's road inventory database that represents a subset of road characteristic attributes of the NCDOT state road system. The state road system is comprised of Interstate, US, NC, Secondary Routes, and Ramps. This layer also includes some non-state maintained and projected roads that are required for reporting purposes.

Statewide Primary & Secondary Road Arcs

This is a digital file of the North Carolina Department of Transportation's Linear Referencing System that represents the routes and attributes of the NCDOT state road system. The state road system is comprised of Interstate, US, NC, Secondary Routes, and Ramps and some non-state maintained and projected roads required for reporting purposes.

A Route Layer for visual representation of attributes stored by County/Route/Milepost linear reference. This is a digital file of the North Carolina Department of Transportation's Linear Referencing System that represents the routes and attributes of the NCDOT state road system. The state road system is comprised of Interstate, US, NC, Secondary Routes, and Ramps and some non-state maintained and projected roads required for reporting purposes.

Municipal Boundaries

Polygon layer primarily consisting of municipalities that participate in the Powell Bill.

Smoothed 2010 Census Urbanized Boundaries

Polygon layer representing the smoothed boundaries for the 2010 Census urban areas in North Carolina. The boundaries were originally generated by the US Census Bureau and have been adjusted (smoothed) by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, in cooperation with North Carolina’s Metropolitan Planning Organizations.

MPO/RPO Boundaries

Polygons depicting the various MPO and RPO boundaries, covering the entire state of North Carolina. Existing MPOs expanded their Metropolitan Planning Areas (MPAs) to include all territory in Census 2010 UZAs. All boundary adjustments are approved by the Governor(s) and submitted to the FHWA Division Office(s). The MPA boundaries include the entire UZA boundary identified in the 2010 decennial Census and the contiguous geographic area likely to become urbanized within 20 years. RPOs were created for transportation planning in rural North Carolina areas not within an MPO.

County Boundaries

Polygon layer representing County Boundaries developed by North Carolina Geodetic Survey to facilitate planning, siting, and impact analysis in the 100 individual counties of North Carolina.

Integrated Statewide Road Network (ISRN)

A statewide road layer that incorporates all road systems built from local and TIGER sources. This product is version 2 of an initiative to build, maintain, and incorporate all road systems in a comprehensive digital layer. See the documents within the ZIP file for a detailed product description, geocoding and networking instructions, and related statistics.

NCDOT Bike Routes

The bike routes shapefile contains lines representing North Carolina bike routes, as defined by the Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation. Bike routes include the Interstate, State, County, Regional, and Urban routes and were based on the DOTRoads file, produced by NCDOT. The shapefile layer is in North Carolina Stateplane NAD83 meters format.

NCDOT Bridges & Other Structures First Quarter 2016 Release

The Structures layer contains all features previously found in the NCDOTBridgeLocations shapefile, plus 3 types of signs currently maintained by the NCDOT Structures Management Unit.

NCDOT Rail Division DataFirst Quarter 2016 Release

An authoritative geospatial representation of accurate and consistent railroad layers from the North Carolina Rail Division.

The track dataset provided includes line data that represents the entire standard gauge freight and passenger railroad track in North Carolina.

The crossings dataset provided includes point data that represets all open and public rail crossings in North Carolina.

The facility dataset contains point features that represent railroad yards, intermodal and transload locations.
