  • 4.11 Type E Signs (Regulatory and Warning Signs)

  • The “Type E Signs" Sign Design sheet(s) is a table of all the required Regulatory and Warning signs of the project. For each required Type E sign, the sheet shall contain the sign number, the quantity of each sign, a graphic image of the sign, the sign size, the MUTCD SHS number, the number of U-channel posts per sign, specific mounting information, and special color and sheeting information.

If different sizes, texts or colors are required for the same type of sign, separate sign numbers shall be assigned to those signs.

If a Type E sign requires Fluorescent Yellow-Green sheeting per the MUTCD, a note shall appear on the plans stating the color and the NCDOT Grade B sheeting.

All Type E signs shall be installed on 3-lb U channel or square tube posts in accordance with the NCDOT Roadway Standard Drawings.  Wood supports may be installed on a case by case scenario if approved by the managing unit.

If a Type E sign is to be mounted above, below or back to back with another sign, the specific mounting information shall be shown on the “Type E Signs" Sign Design sheet.

If a Type E sign is to be mounted on barrier supports, large or small, the specific mounting information shall be shown on the “Type E Signs" Sign Design sheet.

    Custom Type E Signs

In certain situations, a regulatory or warning sign is needed that is not shown in the MUTCD SHS.  In such cases, a full panel design for each custom sign shall be shown in the plan set and referenced from the “Type E Signs" sign design sheet. Refer to NCDOT Specification 901 for fabrication details and required notes.

    Object Markers

Object markers are identifiers warning drivers of objects in or near the travel way.  Even though the pay item and RSD are included in the Pavement Marking sections, all object markers shall be shown on the Signing Plan Sheets and on the “Type E Signs" Sign Design sheets.  Object markers shall be assigned 400 series numbers but shall not be included in the overall quantity of Type E Signs.  If installed independently, object markers shall be erected on one 7' u-channel post per sign.  Add additional mounting descriptions if mounted below/above/back-to-back with another Type E sign.
