  • 4.14 Overlay Designs and Placement Details

  • Overlays shall match the background and legend colors and sheeting type of the sign being overlaid.

The proposed overlay width and height shall cover the existing legend (accounting for the underhang lowercase letters) and not overlap any adjacent existing legend to be retained.  Provide a minimum of 1"-2" edge spacing surrounding all text such that the installation rivets will not have to be placed through the text.  The vertical and horizontal dimensions of overlays do not need to be in 6" increments.

If the existing sign panel layout is available or field measured, show overlay placement details that dimension the horizontal and vertical placement of the overlay to the nearest sign edge.  If the existing sign panel layout is not known or unable to be measured in the field, provide notes describing the horizontal and vertical placement relative to existing sign legend(s) being retained.

    • Regarding overlays, we recommend a degree of engineering judgement when it comes to the use of overlays. We do not recommend the complete overlay of a sign panel. We also do not recommend replacing an overlay with an overlay. Sign age should be taken into consideration when determining whether an overlay is an option.
