• Methodology to Assess Vegetation, Hydrologic, and Soil Parameters that Affect Wetland Restoration Success

    NCDOT Research Project Number: 2008-16

Executive Summary

  • This 2-year study examined wetland restoration at Juniper Bay in Robeson County, North Carolina.  Juniper Bay is a 750 acre restored wetland that was drained in the 1970s and used for agriculture until 2002.  The North Carolina Department of Transportation purchased the property and initiated wetland restoration in 2003 by planting trees.  Restoration was completed in 2005.  This research involved four objectives:  1) to identify soil, chemical and physical properties and hydrologic requirements for optimum growth of Carolina Bay vegetation, 2) to test different planting methodologies for establishing tree species, 3) to assess the potential for Phosphorous loss from the restored wetland surface areas, and 4) to determine whether hydrologic trespass is occurring onto neighboring lands.
