• Demand Response Transportation Planning and Visualization Tools

    NCDOT Research Project Number: 2018-12

Executive Summary

  • Demand Response Transportation (DRT) provide a necessary service to their community. One of the biggest issues facing DRTs is the continued decrease in funding, from Federal to State to the Local level. To continue to meet the needs of their community, DRTs must evolve their service offerings to become more efficient to meet the financial burdens. This does not have to require eliminating service but redefining how they offer service and asking their community to work with them to try and group more trips. To do this, DRT providers need a suite of tools that can find patterns within their historical origin and destination data to support changes to their service patterns that will help to maximize their efficiency. The Demand Response Transportation Planning and Visualization web-mapping application not only provides visualizations of high areas of demand but also highlights patterns of movement across their service area. In addition, this application provides a DRT with a set of tools to help in redesigning service patterns that can simplify the scheduling process, create a more intuitive operating environment, and increase transportation effectiveness to their community.
