This technology transfer project is part of an effort by the NCDOT’s Value Management Office (VMO) to further advance its current risk management program by promoting a new risk profiling tool that helps identify project risks and mitigation strategies. A previous research project (Report FHWA/NC/2021-16), conducted by the proposed principal investigator (PI), studied past claims and supplemental agreements for different project types to better understand risk profiles for various projects (e.g., rural, urban, and bridge replacement). As a result, an Excel-based Risk Insight Tool (RIT) and a Risk Management Playbook (RMP) were created, providing valuable risk insights and mitigation strategies to support project managers and their teams as they perform risk assessments. This project aims to ensure both the usability and usage of these tools by considering the development of a suitable “how to guide,” which may be in the form of standard operating procedures and/or training materials to maximize the benefits gained by the NCDOT.
