The “Type F Signs" Sign Design sheet(s) is a table of all the required Type F guide signs for the project. For each required Type F sign, the sheet shall contain the sign assembly number, a graphic image of the final sign assembly, each panel sign size, panel color if non-standard, the number of U-channel posts per assembly, and specific mounting information.
All Type F signs are typically installed on 3-lb U-channel posts in accordance with the NCDOT Roadway Standard Drawings. However, alternatives such as wood supports, or square tubing is allowed. Wood supports may be installed on a case by case scenario if approved by the managing unit. If Type F signs will be composed of multiple panels due to multiple routes, the windload may exceed that allowed by U-channel or wood posts. If this is the case, a different type of support should be investigated. If steel supports are considered, enhanced signing may also be a consideration. (MUTCD Link) Enhanced signing maybe beneficial at complex and multi-lane facility at interstates based on engineering judgement and discussion with project engineer.
If a Type F is to be mounted above, below or back-to-back with another sign, the specific mounting information shall be shown on the “Type F Signs" Sign Design sheet. If Type F signs are mounted back-to-back, they should be of the same or similar size.
If a Type F sign is to be mounted on barrier supports, large or small, the specific mounting information shall be shown on the “Type F Signs" Sign Design sheet. (Standard Drawing Link 903.30)
All text on the “Type F Signs" Sign Design sheet shall be upper case letters.
