All existing pavement markings at tie in and proposed pavement markings shall be represented by an accurate graphic representation that matches the proposed roadway geometry and traffic analysis traffic diagrams. All standard pavement marking lines and symbols shall use the standard NCDOT cell libraries and level names. Graphic representation of all existing and proposed pavement markings shall be complete and represent the condition of the traffic network at the time of completion of the project. Existing pavement marking conditions being modified and future pavement markings shall not be shown on the Pavement Marking Plan Sheets.
All projects shall be designed according to the MUTCD and NCDOT RSD Section 1205. Place all linework, symbols and alphanumeric characters using the standard NCDOT SDU levels and cell libraries. Line weights may be changed for clarity as needed.
Pavement markings shall be designed in coordination with the final roadway plans, public hearing maps, traffic analysis reports, traffic signal designs and other sources. Any discrepancies between these sources shall be brought to the attention of the managing unit as soon as possible to remedy the discrepancy.
In the process of developing the pavement marking linework, analyze the project for unfavorable conditions such as lack of lane continuity, lane configurations that do not meet driver expectations, lane reductions in curves, sight distance issues, lane drops into private driveways, etc. All unfavorable conditions shall be brought to the attention of the Project Manager to discuss with other units.
All passing zones for two lane roads will be determined in the field. A double yellow center line should always be shown in the pavement marking design with a general note on the Title Sheet reading “Passing zones will be determined in the field and must be approved by the Engineer."
Pavement rehabilitation projects shall be designed to the current RSD with respect to line widths, types and symbol spacing. Lane configuration for pavement rehabilitation projects should retain the existing conditions unless specific improvements are required.
Review the project commitment sheets (green sheets) for any pavement marking related items such as decorative crosswalks or midblock crossings and incorporate the committed items into the pavement marking plans.
Confirm location of applicable pavement marking line work with the proposed location of applicable regulatory, warning and guide signs per the current RSD and MUTCD.
