• 05 PAVEMENT MARKING AND DELINEATION PLANS

  • 5.10 Pavement Marking Types

  • NCDOT projects use four main types of pavement markings: Paint (not considered long life), Cold-Applied Plastic, Thermoplastic, and Polyurea.  All NCDOT TIP projects should use long-life markings for permanent installations, unless otherwise specified by the Division for service roads.  The type of long-life marking shall be chosen using the Pavement Marking Material Selection Chart based on the county the project is located and the pavement material.

For all NCDOT TIP Projects, the selection of marking type shall be documented via a Pavement Marking Recommendation letter requested from and furnished by the SDU State Signing and Pavement Marking Standards Engineer.  The material type is to be listed on the Pavement Marking Plan Title Sheet under the general notes and on the Pavement Marking Schedule.

All bicycle lane markings should be heated-in-place thermoplastic.
