• 05 PAVEMENT MARKING AND DELINEATION PLANS

  • 5.17 Raised Pavement Markers

  • Raised Pavement Markers are used to supplement longitudinal pavement marking lines to enhance visibility in wet or night time conditions.  NCDOT utilizes three types of pavement markers Permanent Raised, Snowplowable and Tubular. Please see Pavement Marking recommendation memo from Signing and Delineation Standards Engineer to determine appropriate type of delineation for facility.

    Permanent Raised Markers

Permanent Raised Pavement Markers are recommended for concrete bridges and to match existing markers for -Y- lines for all TIP projects.  The color of the permanent raised pavement markers is dependent upon the color of the line the marker is supplementing.  The side of a permanent raised pavement marker that is visible to traffic proceeding in the wrong direction shall be red.

Permanent Raised Pavement Markers are not required to be graphically shown or called out on the plan sheets.  If shown on the plans, the callout shall be adjacent to the longitudinal line callout the marker is intended to supplement.  Spacing is not required to be shown on the plans.  List the applicable RSD on the Pavement Marking Plan Title Sheet.  Quantities are required for permanent raised pavement markers.

    Snowplowable Markers

Snowplowable Pavement Markers are recommended for all NCDOT projects unless specifically not requested by Divisions or they are required to be Permanent Markers (such as bridges).  The color of the snowplowable raised pavement markers is dependent upon the color of the line the marker is supplementing.

Snowplowable Raised Pavement Markers are not required to be graphically shown nor called on the plan sheets.  If shown on the plans, the callout shall be adjacent to the longitudinal line callout the marker is intended to supplement.  Spacing is not required to be shown on the plans.  List the applicable RSD on the Pavement Marking Plan Title Sheet.  Quantities are required for snowplowable raised pavement markers.

    Tubular Markers

Tubular shall be the same color as the pavement marking line(s) that the tubular markers is vertically extending.  Tubular Markers shall not be used without an accompanying pavement marking line.

Tubular markers shall be shown graphically on the plan at the correct spacing.  Provide at least one callout per sheet.  Provide beginning and end stations supplemented with a standard spacing for the tubular markers and, if required, an offset or taper length.  List the applicable RSD on the Pavement Marking Plan Title Sheet.  Quantities are required for tubular markers.
