Attention:
Starting August 1, 2025 the North Carolina Department of Transportation Oversize/Overweight Permit Unit will no longer accept faxed permit applications. Customers not already ordering permits through our online service will need to make preparations with their organization to create online accounts with PIMS (Permit Information Management System). A PIMS Online Account Request Form can be found below under the General Information section.
HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
The Permit Office will be CLOSED on Thursday, November 27th and Friday, November 28th, 2025.
No travel for overwidth, overheight or overlength permitted vehicle/vehicle combinations or vehicle combinations with a gross weight exceeding 112,000 lbs will be authorized on NC highways from noon Wednesday, November 26, 2025 until noon Friday, November 28, 2025.
Generally a permit is required if:
- weight exceeds legal weight by NC law,
- total width is over 8'6",
- overall height is greater than 14',
- a single vehicle is over 40' or vehicle combination is over 60' in length, or (Exception: truck tractor/53-foot semi-trailer combination with no overall length limitation is allowed on all roads).
