The Materials and Tests Unit has the responsibility of establishing acceptance criteria for materials and manufactured products to be incorporated into the North Carolina highway system and insuring that these materials and manufactured products meet these criteria and will function as intended.
Designs and approves asphalt mixes for the Materials and Tests Unit.
Establishes acceptance critieria, provides testing and data, and ensures compliance for natural, manufactured and recycled soil and aggregate products.
Performs shop and plant inspections for metals and prestressed concrete.
The Field Operations area is responsible for sampling and testing the various materials used in the construction and maintenance of our highway system.
The Research and Investigations Section (R&IS) is responsible for performing research into new materials submitted for use in our highway system.
Supports the Materials and Tests Unit and Divisions by providing testing related equipment and supplies used to ensure materials and products meet quality requirements.
Pavement Design and Analysis provides pavement designs for TIP projects and Division projects.
The Materials and Tests Unit hosts various inspection schools/classes to provide technicians the appropriate certifications needed to sample and/or test materials used on construction projects. Materials and Tests Technical Trainers are responsible for scheduling and leading most of these inspection schools/classes and are also available to help with material concerns on projects.
The Quality Systems Section has the responsibility of ensuring that the specified materials utilized on NCDOT projects have the appropriate certifications, test reports or other required information necessary to certify the materials.
