The Field Operations area is responsible for sampling and testing the various materials used in the construction and maintenance of our highway system and for conducting Technician Assessments. In order to accomplish this tremendous task, this section is divided into four geographical regions. Each region is managed by an Area Materials Engineer and consists of three to four Sections that each correspond to a NCDOT Division. Each section is comprised of a Section Materials Specialist and one or two Materials Technicians.
Each section has the responsibility of inspecting materials produced at all the quarries, sand pits, ready-mixed concrete plants, corrugated metal pipe plants, corrugated plastic pipe plants, concrete pipe plants, precast concrete plants, seed companies, and other specialty plants and manufacturers in their area. Additionally, these inspectors travel to various production facilities throughout the eastern and mid-western United States.
The Field Operations area is also responsible for conducting Technician Certification classes throughout the State.
