• Propogation and Culture of Federally Listed Freshwater Mussel Species

    NCDOT Research Project Number: 2009-16

Executive Summary

  • The goal of this project was to improve propogation and culture techniques for four federally endangered species in North Carolina:  the dwarf wedgemussel (Alasmidonta heterodon), Appalachian elktoe (Alasmidonta raveneliana), Carolina heelsplitter (Lasmigona decorata), and Tar River spinymussel (Elliptio steinstansana). The dwarf wedgemussel required additional host determination studies. Determination of a fish host was the focus for the Applachian elktoe, Carolina heelsplitter and Tar River spinymussel.
