• BioRePavation: Biological-based Asphalt Pavement Binder

    NCDOT Research Project Number: 2017-33

Executive Summary

  • The proposed project is to investigate the merits of application of bio-adhesive from bio-mass (swine manure) for asphalt pavements construction.  The project aims to demonstrate that using  bio-adhesive from swine manure can improve pavement performance.  To do so, this project will assess the technical solutions aiming to reduce the use of virgin petroleum-based asphalt also referred to as “bitumen” for road maintenance and construction. Accordingly, this project will perform not only production and characterization of bio-adhesive but also places a trial test section as part of technology demonstration under Infravation agreement. Considering the urgent need for infrastructure rehabilitation, the introduction and application of this sustainable and environmentally friendly material is expected to have significant impacts on the national economy.
