The Minorities in Transportation Tech Initiative (“MITTI”) seeks to reduce disparities for minorities and women in transportation technology by enhancing access to education, training, and certification programs; sourcing and sustaining the pipeline for employment and entrepreneurial endeavors, and enhancing opportunities for participation in research associated with the development and deployment of future technologies.
MITTI endeavors to build a community within North Carolina and around the country to encourage public-private partnerships, private sector support, and progressive policymaking that aligns with the aims of this effort. An outgrowth of the work being done by NCDOT’s Office of Civil Rights and Office of HBCU Outreach, MITTI also endeavors to increase networking and mentorship opportunities among minorities and women.
Beyond assessing the current state of minorities in transportation technology across North Carolina, MITTI aims to convene leading practitioners of color in the transportation technology space, and establish a resource pool to share information about, and develop best practices around, engaging diverse participants and scaling new ventures in the sector. At root, the goal of this effort is to identify “low hanging fruit” opportunities supporting a more diverse and inclusive transportation technology ecosystem in which women and people of color can become more active participants in the places where the industry is headed.
