• Performance Evaluation and Installation Guidelines for W-beam Guardrails behind Curbs

    NCDOT Research Project Number: 2013-10

Executive Summary

  • The main objective of the proposed research is to evaluate the performance of 27-, 29- and 31-inch high W-beam guardrails under MASH Test Level 2 (TL-2) conditions when placed behind curbs at zero- and 12-foot offsets. Finite element modeling and simulation will be employed to evaluate the guardrails under impacts of both a small passenger car and a large pickup truck. The performance of the three guardrails will also be evaluated under MASH TL-2 conditions to develop installation guidelines for their placement behind the NCDOT 2¿-6¿ curb and gutter.
