Connecting to the Highway-Construction Industry
  • Heavy construction and structure maintenance is among the top sectors in North Carolina and the United States. In fact, construction is a major contributor to the U.S. economy. The industry has more than 745,000 employers (including 24,730 in North Carolina) with over 7.6 million employees and creates nearly $1.4 trillion worth of structures each year.​

    The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) emphasizes construction jobs pay well. In North Carolina, ​three out of five most numerous construction occupations had higher median pay than the median for all employees in the state in 2020. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (USBLS), the median annual wage for all construction occupations was $48,210 in May 2021, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $45,760.

    Working in the highway construction and maintenance industry is a viable way to make a living and have a life-long career in North Carolina.​
