• How NCDOT Staff Request Mapping

This hub provides guidance for NCDOT Project Managers, Resident Engineers, and other NCDOT staff to request and obtain the following:
    • Best Available Data (1PH1)
    • Aerial Mapping (1PH2)
    • Construction Earthwork Quantity Determination
  • Best Available Data (1PH1)

Upon request, the Photogrammetry Unit will obtain, analyze, and provide best available orthoimagery, elevation data, and county property data for project area. If applicable, the Photogrammetry Unit can provide more current data by flying the project area at high attitude and delivering either an Orthophoto with elevation data or topographic mapping with elevation data and orthophoto at 100-foot scale or 200-foot scale. For more information on these products, how to self-service, and/or request this data see below.

  • Aerial Mapping (1PH2)

Upon request, the Photogrammetry Unit will obtain controlled aerial photography that covers the supplied project limits using a large format metric frame camera at specific flying heights to produce mapping at the needed accuracy for the applicable planning or design phase. The Photogrammetry Unit will either contract the project to a PEF or use in-house staff to perform aerotriangulation using ground survey control provided by the L&S Unit and airborne GNSS-IMU control, compile planimetric and digital terrain mapping data covering the supplied project limits, and create a digital mosaic of the imagery.

  • Construction Earthwork Quantity Determination

The Photogrammetry Unit supports NCDOT construction projects by providing earthwork pay quantities upon request from NCDOT Resident Engineer’s Offices. This type of project includes multiple missions, each flown at a different stage during the construction process, to quantify how much earthwork has been moved. There is two Aerial System options but most project locations benefit from the traditional Manned Aerial System (Manual from Don). New location projects, borrow pits, stockpiles, or construction projects in low travel regions are good candidates to consider for Unmanned (drone) aerial photography missions for earthwork quantity determination due to FAA drone operation restrictions. The Photogrammetry Unit will help you to select the best aerial system for your project.
